About the event

Classical

Classical Unlocked and Gotobeat present an electrifying double bill from two of Australia’s most boundary-pushing solo artists.

London-based cellist William Jack incorporates his jazz guitar background into an unconventional style of cello playing, combining cellopickin’ grooves, catchy hooks, and intimate melodic writing.

Joining him is Melbourne-based violinist, composer, and vocalist Xani Kolac, whose performances blend soaring violin lines with powerful vocals, looping, and fearless genre-crossing.

Together, these two Australian artists bring distinct voices, shared roots, and high-octane solo sets to the same stage for one night only

Doors: 7:00 pm

William Jack

William Jack is an Australian multi-style cellist and songwriter, based in London. He is best known for incorporating his jazz guitar background into an unconventional style of cello playing, with a passion for breaking boundaries between genres and cultures. His music transitions seamlessly from virtuosic folk & bluegrass compositions to non-Western sound worlds.

Since his classical studies in Vienna, William has forged his own cello pathway, touring Europe, Australia and the UK extensively. He has recently performed his solo compositions from his album collection ‘This Old Cello Box’ live on BBC Radio 3 at the Edinburgh Fringe and was selected to perform as a ‘New Folk’ songwriter at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas. William received the best music award at the 2025 Adelaide Fringe. He has been fortunate to work with numerous world-renowned artists, both as a session musician and collaborator. William is passionate about redefining the cello possibilities, bringing the instrument into exciting new territories.

Xani Kolac

Xani Kolac is a rule-bender with a violin. Classically trained, then gleefully corrupted, she rips the instrument out of stereotypes and drops it into the mess of songs, stories, and noise. One night it’s a gut-punch ballad, the next it’s a wall of distortion, and usually both in the same set. Improviser, composer, instigator — Xani’s shows swing like a wrecking ball between raw chaos and cinematic, heart-bursting stillness. Always restless, always rewriting the script, never giving you the same thing twice.

Xani trained in jazz/improv at the Victorian College of the Arts and since graduating, she has performed at jazz clubs, concert halls and pubs all over the country and more recently, parts of Europe, Japan and the United States. One night it’s a gut-punch ballad, the next it’s a wall of distortion, and usually both in the same set.

In 2025, Xani performed at Tallinn Music Week (Estonia), SXSW London and at Sofar Sounds in Berlin. She also performed at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, the Brunswick Music Festival and toured nationally to promote the release of her "Live at The Jazzlab" album.

Improviser, composer, instigator — Xani’s shows incorporate live looping, electronic effects and fully improvised pieces; sometimes joined by collaborators on drum kit or even electric cello.
