Impure Wilhelmina is a Swiss band originating from Geneva, known for its unique blend of sludge metal, doom metal, and progressive metal, often incorporating elements of post-hardcore and dark rock to create a dense, melodic, and melancholic sound. The band, formed in 1996, is fronted by guitarist and vocalist Michael Schindl, who is also the main composer and lyricist. Their music is characterized by introspective lyrics that explore themes of human relationships, violence, anger, solitude, and love, often turning dark subjects into a healing sonic experience. In their latest endeavors, Impure Wilhelmina released their eighth studio album, "Le Sanglot," on May 22, 2026, through Season of Mist. This album marks a significant evolution for the band as it is their first to feature lyrics entirely in French, aiming to unleash new dimensions of sound and renewed creative energy. Reviews highlight "Le Sanglot" as a testament to the band's ability to reinvent themselves while retaining their core identity, moving between crushing weight and melodic restraint, with a generally more languid and atmospheric approach compared to previous works like "Radiation" (2017) and "Antidote" (2021). The album was recorded by Yvan Bing and mastered by Magnus Lindberg. They had a guest appearance from Marion Leclercq of Mütterlein on the track "Train mort". The band had been working on this album since 2023, with the addition of new guitarist Edouard Nicod enriching their sound. Impure Wilhelmina also released the single "Électricité noire" from the album in March 2026.
