Along with his friend and sometime partner Luciano Pavarotti, Plácido Domingo helped ensure that opera remained an art form for everyone. Born in Madrid in 1941, Domingo spent his youth immersed in the Spanish musical form known as zarzuela. Equipped with a voice capable of great force and even greater subtlety, the young tenor landed leading roles in New York productions of Bizet’s Carmen and Ginastera’s Don Rodrigo in the mid-’60s, becoming a phenomenon in the opera world. In 1981, Domingo made the shift from his usual duet partners to John Denver on the title track of Perhaps Love, his first foray into pop. Though he’d have further crossover success with his Latin recordings, he confirmed his mastery of opera alongside Pavarotti and José Carreras on their best-selling albums and tours as The Three Tenors through the ‘90s and early 2000s. Even after changes in his voice led him to embrace roles for baritones in the 2010s, he has remained one of classical music’s premier performers.
