Lizz Wright is an acclaimed American jazz, gospel, blues, and soul singer and songwriter known for her "smooth, dark alto" voice, which the New York Times has praised as having qualities associated with "barrel-aged bourbon or butter-soft leather". She seamlessly blends elements of jazz, gospel, blues, and folk, often describing her distinct sound as simply "American music". Her musical foundation was deeply influenced by her Southern upbringing in Georgia, where she served as the musical director in her father's church. In her latest endeavors, Lizz Wright released her new studio album, "Shadow," on April 12, 2024. This album features five original songs and delves into themes of romantic love, loss, community, and healing, partly inspired by the passing of her grandmother. "Shadow" was released on her independent record label, Blues & Greens Records, which she founded in 2022, allowing her to own her master recordings for the first time in her career. The album includes collaborations with acclaimed artists Angelique Kidjo and Meshell Ndegeocello. Wright also has an extensive tour schedule planned for 2026, with performances across the USA and Europe. She is also slated to perform at the John Coltrane International Jazz and Blues Festival in August 2025 and the NoMad Jazz Festival in Madison Square Park in August 2025. Beyond music, in 2020, she applied her culinary expertise to the Carver 47 Food & Wellness Market in Chicago.
