Classical

Abel Selaocoe is a South African cellist, singer, composer, and improviser known for reimagining classical music by blending it with traditional South African singing, Xhosa throat singing, improvisation, and body percussion. His music seamlessly incorporates genres such as classical, township rhythms, ancestral anthems, and jazz. Selaocoe is an exclusive recording artist with Warner Classics, and his debut album, "Where Is Home (Hae Ke Kae)," was released in 2022 to critical acclaim. He released his second album, "Hymns of Bantu," in February 2025, which celebrates his South African heritage, and a recording of his solo cello concerto, "Four Spirits," followed in August 2025. Selaocoe is an Artistic Partner of The Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, an Artist Spotlight at London's Barbican Centre, and an Artist in Association with the BBC Singers, performing with each several times throughout the season. In 2023, he was awarded the RPS Instrumentalist Award for his vibrant performances and collaborations. His recent and upcoming endeavors include international solo recital tours in 2025/2026, performances with his Bantu Ensemble and trio Chesaba, and debuts at various prestigious venues and festivals globally, including Carnegie Hall. He also continues to perform his solo cello concerto "Four Spirits" widely with orchestras such as the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the London Symphony Orchestra.
