Royal & Derngate is a prominent theatre complex situated in the Cultural Quarter of Northampton, England. It encompasses the historic Royal Theatre, which opened in 1884 and is a Grade II listed building, the modern Derngate Theatre, established in 1983, and the Northampton Filmhouse, added in 2013. The Royal Theatre operates as a producing house with a seating capacity of approximately 450-530, while the versatile Derngate Theatre can accommodate between 1,200 and 1,400 people and hosts a wide array of events including theatre, opera, live music, dance, fashion, and sports. The two theatres formally merged into a single organization in 1999 and underwent a significant £14.5 million redevelopment between 2005 and 2006, reopening as Royal & Derngate in October 2006. It serves as the primary venue for arts and entertainment in Northamptonshire, offering a diverse program of drama, music, dance, comedy, and film, and is managed by the Northampton Theatres Trust.
