Henjila Henjila has always been an artist of opposites. Her earlier work was raised as "adorably sincere" by Clash, and Checkout Mag complimented her "audible softness" but also found her "steely in her stance", In her initial arrival on the scene, she gained notoreity for combining emotionally mature lyrics with the prettiest melodies. This duality of the delicate and the direct is still true of Henjila to this day. Her voice: serene, floaty - but also pitch perfect, and precise. Scrolling through her social media you find someone very comfortable in the spotlight and on stage - but equally delighting in her carefully curated home comforts; plumped cushions, silk curtains, long-burning candles. Prioritising her wellbeing is a must - and in turn, she fulfils her stated purpose of providing a safe space for her fans. Her music, too, provides refreshing contrasts in abundance. Preparing for her first release in three years has taken its time - but focussing on developing her sound has paid dividends. Henjila returns in 2024 with music drawn from a rich array of influences, which complement each other beautifully. She draws distinctly from grunge, UKG, hyperpop, folk, and K-Pop - with inspirations ranging from Ichiko Aoba to Avril Lavigne. Tying it all together is that instantly recognisable, silky smooth voice - unmistakeably soft and soothing, whether over the lightest lullabies or the biggest basslines. Conjuring tales of girlhood, grief, and growth, she adds a new range to her sound, as the girl with the guitar becomes a pop star. Henjila is back - and her future is bright.
