Yijia is a London-based Chinese singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist who expertly weaves traditional Chinese folk heritage with contemporary electronic and ambient psychedelic sounds. Her music is often described as ethereal, "shanmanistic," and indie, characterized by a fusion of futuristic trance beats, traditional melodies, and ethereal vocals, with the ancient Chinese zither, guzheng, often at its core. Her recent endeavors include the release of her spellbinding single "Yi The Sun," which combines celestial beats and folk traditions. This track, a fusion of futuristic trance and ancient tradition, draws from a rare field recording of the Yi ethnic minority of Southwestern China and reflects Yijia's personal discovery of her own Yi ancestry. "Yi The Sun" serves as a glimpse into her forthcoming album, "TU," which was set for release on August 22nd. The album is a project that connects Chinese musical heritage with modern composition, storytelling, and electronic production, featuring reimagined folk songs from Mongolia, China, and Tuvan traditions, alongside her award-winning original works. Yijia views this album as a reflection on heritage, memory, identity, and the evolving dialogue between traditions. She describes her music as "taking my ancestors clubbing," embodying a blend of tribal echoes and dance-floor energy. Yijia's musical journey began as a finalist on a Chinese music show, where she won the CMA Chinese Music Award. She has since performed at prestigious venues like the Royal Albert Hall and WOMAD Festival, and has been interviewed by BBC World Service and BBC Radio 3. She holds a degree in Music from the University of Oxford and SOAS, and has a 'Global Talent' endorsement from the Arts Council UK. She also recently delivered a TEDx Talk at TEDxBrighton, discussing how she uses traditional music cultures to build bridges between communities.
