About the artist

Van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter, among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade, he created approximately 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings. His oeuvre includes landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits, most of which are characterised by bold colours and dramatic brushwork that contributed to the rise of expressionism in modern art. In recent news, a painting bought at a garage sale in Minnesota in 2016 is thought to be a lost artwork by Van Gogh and is estimated to be worth $15 million. The painting, a portrait of a fisherman with the inscription "Elimar," is believed to have been made during his stay at a psychiatric hospital in France in 1889. However, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam has rejected the attribution.
