About the artist

Tarta Relena is a Catalan duo formed in 2016 by Marta Torrella and Helena Ros, who began as an a cappella project exploring diverse vocal music styles. Their genre is best described as electronic-accented folk, which reinterprets traditional Mediterranean music by blending ancient singing traditions with subtle electronic rhythms, reverb, distortion, and beats. They draw inspiration from Mediterranean folk, Georgian laments, Iberian flamenco, Greek rebetiko, and early Western classical music, integrating elements of jazz and dub. The duo sings in multiple languages, including Spanish, Catalan, Greek, Latin, English, and Ladino. Their latest endeavors include the release of their album "És pregunta" in 2024, which won the 2025 MIN Award for Best Roots Music Album. In April 2024, Tarta Relena performed a Tiny Desk Concert for NPR. They also collaborated on a sound installation titled "Sirens and Robots" with oceanographer Joan Llort for the 2024 Biennial of Thought. The duo has a series of concerts scheduled across Europe and North America extending into 2026.
