Rakim, often hailed as "The God MC," is a foundational figure in hip hop, celebrated for pioneering the complex lyrical styles, internal rhymes, and multisyllabic rhyme schemes that transformed East Coast and old-school hip hop. His fluid and effortless delivery has influenced countless artists in the genre. In recent endeavors, Rakim has remained active and influential. He released the single "Not To Be Defined," featuring Lazarus, from his upcoming album "The Re-Up," which was released on August 29, 2025. This track has even received Grammy consideration for Best Rap Song. Additionally, his album "G.O.D.'s Network (REB7RTH)," entirely self-produced, was released on July 26, 2024, featuring artists such as Nipsey Hussle, Snoop Dogg, and Planet Asia. In a historic achievement in May 2025, Rakim became the first rap artist to be awarded the prestigious George Peabody Medal for Outstanding Contributions to Music and Dance in America from Johns Hopkins University, where he also delivered the commencement speech and received an honorary degree.
