Oryx is a Denver-based doom/sludge metal band, characterized by a monolithic wall of sound, thick, suffocating riffs, pulverizing drums, and searing vocals. The band, formed in Las Cruces, New Mexico in 2012 by husband-and-wife duo Thomas (guitars and vocals) and Abigail (drums) Davis, later relocated to Denver, Colorado in 2015. They have evolved from a duo to a trio, with Joshua Kauffman joining on bass, significantly strengthening their sound and songwriting. Their music seamlessly blends blackened doom, atmospheric sludge, death metal, and black metal, often incorporating elements of drone and stoner metal. Oryx's latest endeavor is their fourth studio album, "Primordial Sky," which was released digitally on October 18, 2024, and on vinyl on November 22, 2024, via Translation Loss Records. Recorded in January 2024, the album is described as their "pinnacle offering to date," showcasing deeply expressive songwriting and exploring themes of existential longing, the struggle of mortality, and a "post-human existence that benefits the planet," offering a dichotomy of heaviness and hope. "Primordial Sky" features artwork by sci-fi/NASA artist John Harris. In support of the album, Oryx had a hometown release show in Denver on January 10, 2025. Their track "Ephemeral" from "Primordial Sky" emphasizes their approach to heaviness as an emotional medium rather than just volume.
