One of the great cellists as well as one of the leading conductors of the 20th century, Mstislav Rostropovich's passionate and virtuosic performance style sometimes seemed to reflect the turbulent events in his life, including exile from his native Soviet Union. A strong supporter of new works, he premiered over 100 pieces, including works by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, and Britten that were written for him in the '50s and '60s. He made his conducting debut in 1962. An outspoken humanitarian, his Soviet citizenship was revoked in 1974, the same year he was honored with an International League of Human Rights medal. His benchmark 1991 recording of the complete Bach Cello Suites was issued in 1995. Rostropovich celebrated his 80th birthday a month before his death in April 2007. ~ Marcy Donelson
