About Imarhan

Imarhan is an Algerian Tuareg desert rock quintet, known for their contemporary interpretation of tishoumaren, a genre often referred to as desert blues. Formed in 2006 in Tamanrasset, Algeria, the band's name translates to "the ones I care about" or "very close friends" in Tamasheq, reflecting their strong camaraderie. They are often considered protégés of the acclaimed Tuareg band Tinariwen, with frontman Iyad Moussa Ben Abderahmane (Sadam) being a cousin of Tinariwen's bassist Eyadou Ag Leche. Imarhan blends traditional Tuareg musical elements with diverse influences including rock, funk, West African rhythms, Algerian folk music, and gypsy jazz. Their sound has evolved to incorporate modern touches like synthesizers and electronic textures. In recent news, Imarhan released their fourth studio album, *Essam* (meaning "lightning"), on January 16, 2026. This album, which explores themes influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and political instability in the region, was recorded at their self-built Aboogi studio in Tamanrasset. The band is celebrating its twentieth anniversary in 2026 and is currently on a world tour, with scheduled dates across the UK and Europe. Furthermore, frontman Sadam's Aboogi studio has become a significant community hub, facilitating recordings for other artists, including Tinariwen's latest album, *Hoggar*, and encouraging young women to engage in music.
