Dschinghis Khan is a German Eurodisco pop band originally formed in Munich in 1979 to compete in the Eurovision Song Contest with their eponymous song. Known for their elaborate costumes, energetic choreography, and historical and exotic themed songs, the band quickly gained international popularity, especially in Europe, Russia, and Japan. Their music blends Neue Deutsche Welle, Schlager, and Schlagerparty genres. Famous for hits like "Dschinghis Khan" and "Moskau," the latter of which became a chart-topper in Australia. In recent years, the band has experienced a complex situation with multiple groups operating under the Dschinghis Khan name. A legal battle in July 2021 saw the Munich Regional Court rule in favor of producer Ralph Siegel, awarding him the trademark rights to the group. In 2023, Siegel's lineup was revamped with new members Marco Matias, Selina Kohl, and Michael Thurner. Another iteration, led by original member Wolfgang Heichel and Stefan Track, has also been active. Wolfgang Heichel announced his split from Stefan Track's group in January 2022 due to creative differences. Despite these complexities, Dschinghis Khan continues to perform and release music. The Heichel and Track faction released the album "Here We Go" in February 2021, which includes new songs and self-covers. They also released the single "Istanbul" in November 2020. In September 2022, Dschinghis Khan performed live in Budapest at the "80s Disco Retro Festival". The band has also been involved in supporting the fight against Corona as ambassadors in Russia. Recent YouTube uploads from December 2024 and June 2024 indicate new recordings of their classic song "Dschinghis Khan." The band remains globally recognized as one of Germany's most successful musical exports, captivating audiences with their theatrical stage shows and infectious music.
