About DIR EN GREY

Visual kei
J-rock

DIR EN GREY is a Japanese rock band formed in February 1997, known for its consistent lineup of vocalist Kyo, guitarists Kaoru and Die, bassist Toshiya, and drummer Shinya. Initially associated with the visual kei movement, the band has evolved its sound to incorporate various genres, including J-rock, avant-garde metal, progressive metal, and extreme metal, often maintaining a dramatic stage image despite adopting more subtle attire over time. Their name, a combination of German, French, and English words, was chosen to signify an amorphous, indefinable musical territory. In recent endeavors, DIR EN GREY released the single "The Devil In Me" and the three-track EP "19990120" (featuring re-recordings of their first three singles) in 2024. The band is set to release their 12th studio album, "MORTAL DOWNER," in 2026. To support this new album, they have announced "TOUR26 Downer Absolutely No One," a 12-show tour across Japan from April to May 2026, and special "MORTAL DOWNER" concerts at the Tokyo Garden Theater in July 2026. In 2025, DIR EN GREY also expanded their "TOUR25 WHO IS THIS HELL FOR?" with dates in Anaheim, California, and their first performances in Taiwan and Hong Kong in nearly a decade.
