About Chris Watson

Chris Watson is an award-winning British sound recordist and musician, renowned for his field recordings that capture the intricate soundscapes of the natural world. He was a founding member of the influential experimental industrial band Cabaret Voltaire before dedicating his career to sound recording, often collaborating with the BBC and Sir David Attenborough on numerous nature documentaries, including "The Life of Birds" and "Frozen Planet". His work is characterized by its immersive quality, aiming to transport listeners into specific environments through detailed and often untreated location recordings. In his latest endeavors, Chris Watson has a new album titled "Planet Ocean" scheduled for release on January 2, 2026, which celebrates the sounds, rhythms, and textures of oceans worldwide. He also collaborated on "Seven Sonic Wonders," a groundbreaking album released in March 2024 that explores rare and endangered sounds of our planet in Dolby Atmos, with proceeds benefiting EarthPercent. Watson contributed to the Apple TV+ 2024 documentary series "Earthsounds," narrated by Tom Hiddleston, and Sky Nature's "Secret World of Sound with David Attenborough," which premiered in February 2024, utilizing cutting-edge audio technology to reveal new insights into animal communication. Looking ahead, Watson is involved in an evolving research project and installation with Franco-Lebanese artist Tarek Atoui and Eric La Casa, layering recordings from port cities, which will be on view until June 16, 2026. In March 2025, there will be performances of his surround soundscape 'Namib' at Queen Mary's University in London. He is also slated to present "The Sound of Sanctuary," an immersive soundscape project, at Festival Antigen in Switzerland in February 2025. Additionally, Watson is set to compose a 90-second piece for BBC Radio 4 to mark the Summer Solstice in July 2025. He will also be presenting "A Journey South," detailing his trip to Antarctica for the BBC TV series "A Frozen Planet" (2026), in Felpham, West Sussex in July 2024, with proceeds going to a local post office campaign. He continues to release and make his extensive catalogue of recordings available, including on his Bandcamp page.
