Chinese American Bear is a Seattle-based Chinese American indie pop-rock duo known for creating quirky, lighthearted, and eclectic bilingual "ear candy" that blends Chinese mando-pop with Western indie pop. Composed of married musicians Anne Tong and Bryce Barsten, the band prides itself on a DIY approach, writing, producing, engineering, and mixing all their music themselves. Their music often combines retro sounds from the 60s and 70s with lighthearted lyrics about food, space, and other fun topics. The duo released their sophomore album, "Wah!!!," on October 18, 2024, via Moshi Moshi and Modern Sky in China. Following its release, Chinese American Bear embarked on tours across the US, UK, and China in late 2024, including a 14-city tour in China alongside dream-pop group City Flanker. They are scheduled to continue touring throughout 2025. Recent single releases include "Dim Sum (点心)" on January 29, 2025, "Kids Go Down (孩子们的时光) [Slowed]" on March 17, 2025, "Take Me To Beijing (一起回北京) [Slowed]" on April 16, 2025, and an upcoming EP "Waaaaaaaah!!!" on May 16, 2025, and the single "Forever Lover (永远的爱人)" on October 27, 2025. The band has garnered significant attention, being featured on Spotify Editorial Playlists like "New in Indie," "Chill Vibes," and "Chinese Indie Picks," and praised by outlets such as BBC, Paste Magazine, and KEXP. Their live shows are described as energetic and interactive, often featuring costumed performers and audience participation, including lessons in Chinese culture and language.
